:: [Prev] Listen up, Lieberman! [Next]
I just faxed this to Senator Zoidberg:
Senator Joseph Lieberman
One Constitution Plaza
Hartford, CT 06103
Dear Senator Lieberman,
I read the remarks you made about George Ryan in yesterday's New York Times, in which you declared that his Death Row commutations undermine our system of justice. I am appalled that you think Ryan's humanitarian actions do more damage to the justice system than the institutionalized problems that sent at least 17 innocent men in Illinois to Death Row. And this is not just a problem in my state -- more than 100 innocent people have been freed from Death Row since executions were reinstated in 1977.
You've made a name for yourself trying to rid the nation of the fake violence in movies and rap music, yet when you have an opportunity to decry real, horrifying violence -- the kind delivered by racist cops who torture confessions out of innocent people, the kind delivered by a state that nearly executed those innocent people -- you think only of your political reputation. Governor Ryan couldn't live with the prospect of mistakenly executing an innocent person. Does that possibility not trouble you enough to reconsider your stance? It should.
As a lifelong Democrat, I believe our party should be taking the lead on eliminating the racist, classist, error-prone death penalty system, not sucking up to Republicans by playing "tough on crime." You should be ashamed. You will never get my vote for President.
To demonstrate how completely I loathe Mr. Lieberman, I'd vote to reelect George W. ahead of him.
And I'd vote for Satan ahead of George W.
