RUMA, Ill. -- When Pope John Paul II names four new saints Sunday in Rome, the nuns who live among the plowed fields just west of this village of 260 will celebrate. The founder of their order, a charismatic 19th Century Italian preacher named Maria De Mattias, is being canonized.

The sisters call themselves the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. "Some people think it's kind of gory," said Sister Janis Yaekel, director of the retreat center at their brick convent.

Hey, gore comes with the religion. You got your Sacred Hearts, and your crucifixions, and your body of Christ, and your lepers, and your I-don't-know-whats. These kids today, with their religions, I don't get 'em.

I once met a nun from that order. I told her I thought their name should be the Bloody Severed Leg of the Crucified Savior. I was then beaten, in her mercy.
