I've been meaning to post something about this for a while and now, with the winter consuming season upon us, seems like the perfect time. Chicago's venerable Women and Children First Bookstore -- the largest feminist bookstore in the country -- is having a rough time against the new Borders in Uptown. Almost everyone I know shops at WCF for "specialty" books (fiction by women, lefty political treatises, the latest issue of Bitch), but most people believe they have to go to the bigger chain stores or Amazon to satisfy the rest of their bookish needs.
This, fortunately, is not the case. Hooray!
While WCF's in-store selection is indeed limited, you can buy just about any damn book you want through their BookSense-powered online store. And, if you live in Chicago, you can save the shipping charges by picking up your order at the store. See? So much better than Amazon! Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, you could buy the complete works of Tom Clancy* and support your local feminists at the same time!
Keep those dollars local, folks. It's the best way to spend.
*You know, for your dad or something.

And, as I mentioned on the Gapers Block mailing list yesterday, they have an affiliates program, just like Amazon. So bloggers can link to books on the BookSense site, and if people follow the link and buy the book, the bloggers get a small amount of money. Everhbody wins!
