No More Mister Nice Blog links to an article on the horrifying shittiness that is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart shoppers are not only trampling each other, they're stomping the world economy into a coma as well:

Of course, U.S. companies have been moving jobs offshore for decades, long before Wal-Mart was a retailing power. But there is no question that the chain is helping accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries such as China. Wal-Mart, which in the late 1980s and early 1990s trumpeted its claim to "Buy American," has doubled its imports from China in the past five years alone, buying some $12 billion in merchandise in 2002. That's nearly 10% of all Chinese exports to the United States.

One way to think of Wal-Mart is as a vast pipeline that gives non-U.S. companies direct access to the American market. "One of the things that limits or slows the growth of imports is the cost of establishing connections and networks," says Paul Krugman, the Princeton University economist. "Wal-Mart is so big and so centralized that it can all at once hook Chinese and other suppliers into its digital system. So--wham!--you have a large switch to overseas sourcing in a period quicker than under the old rules of retailing."

Steve Dobbins has been bearing the brunt of that switch. He's president and CEO of Carolina Mills, a 75-year-old North Carolina company that supplies thread, yarn, and textile finishing to apparel makers--half of which supply Wal-Mart. Carolina Mills grew steadily until 2000. But in the past three years, as its customers have gone either overseas or out of business, it has shrunk from 17 factories to 7, and from 2,600 employees to 1,200. Dobbins's customers have begun to face imported clothing sold so cheaply to Wal-Mart that they could not compete even if they paid their workers nothing.

"People ask, 'How can it be bad for things to come into the U.S. cheaply? How can it be bad to have a bargain at Wal-Mart?' Sure, it's held inflation down, and it's great to have bargains," says Dobbins. "But you can't buy anything if you're not employed. We are shopping ourselves out of jobs."

When General Motors was the largest employer in the US, its workers had decent jobs with unions, health care, and pensions. It wasn't glamorous, and none of the rank-and-file got rich working there, but they could afford to raise their families, buy houses, send their kids to college, save a little something for retirement. Now Wal-Mart is the largest employer -- wages are poverty-level low, benefits are minimal (if you even qualify for them; many Wal-Mart workers don't), overtime work is forced and unpaid, women are harassed and discriminated against. How is this good for anyone? How does it benefit the economy -- long term -- for anyone other than Wal-Mart shareholders? How much is that $29 DVD player really going to cost you?

Wal-Mart's swell! I mean, they offered to put that DVD player ON HOLD for her!

Right. Target is way superior.

elavil @ 12/01/2003 02:39 PM CST

the mighty jimbo @ 12/01/2003 07:43 PM CST

Here's a site that sells "Fuck Wal-Mart" apparel.

Good stuff.

DTB @ 07/03/2005 02:18 PM CST

overtime work is forced and unpaid, women are harassed and discriminated against.

Those are untrue. I dont know where people get that from. They do however have you fill out a form when you can work, then make you work when you are unable to. They also will force you to change positions, and if you don't want to, they make you quit. They hire way to many non-speaking english people. They hire way to many females for positions that they shouldnt hire them for. Not being sexist but there is no reason to hire females to through stock like pets. Hire a guy to through pets so I dont have to deal with a female taking me from my work every 5 minutes so I can help them lift a bag of pet food. Send them to a place they can handle, clothes, deli, etc. Wal-mart promotes to many idiots. A lot of the managers don't deserve the position because they dont know how to talk to associates and they don't have the experience.

Marc @ 09/23/2007 02:20 PM CST

You are a fucking idiot. Learn how to spell and write in proper english before you go criticizing Walmart for hiring non-english speaking minorities. You look like a fucking fool.

It's 'too' not 'to' you idiot.

Dr Manhattan @ 06/29/2008 10:29 PM CST

I see so many people pissed about walmart and then they say I shop target. target isn'y going to be any better if they were in walmarts' position

jeffrey @ 07/07/2008 04:49 AM CST

fuck walmart. this isn't a grammar contest, so take your proper english and shove it up your twat. walmart is a piece of shit corporation.

that on guy @ 01/03/2009 11:13 AM CST

My beef is the poor benefits, insurance, that is offered and then when a person is eligible it THE INSURANCE COST IS WAY TOO MUCH.

David L Nance @ 02/03/2009 07:51 PM CST

Fuck all these big box retail bastards. They've been screwing US manufacturers for years. Basically, they monopolize the market outlets and buy the cheapest foreign made shit they can. More profit for them and screw the US worker.

Schratboy @ 03/20/2009 07:17 AM CST

Ha like target is any better, lets give our money to a french based company. sounds like they will keep it in the us rite? As far as forcing overtime. overtime isint aloud! working off the clock gets your fired! its not like they could "Buy American", we don't make anything! that started long before walmart was around. N.A.F.T.A is a beautiful thing isint it?

Will @ 03/30/2009 08:06 AM CST

I don't like any company that gathers its executives and store managers and tells them that if they vote one way or another (for walmart's purposes they vote republican) they can plan on looking for new jobs. They take the typical republican scare tactics and pass it on to their employees. I also agree that they are destroying the American lifestyle with cheap shit hidden in a name brand (by the way, many of their "name brands" are specially made for walmart to sell CHEAP, examples include certain HP laptops that are only sold there, certain tv models, and many other electronics). Notice that any products that cannot be knocked off are no cheaper there than anywhere else and the "exclusive" items only at walmart are cheap because they were made to be. For me, I drive an extra 10 minutes to go to the local mom and pop shop to do my shopping (I pass by a super walmart on the way).

Chris @ 07/13/2009 08:30 PM CST

I didn't have a problem working for walmart until they fired me for not being able to perform at the grueling working level I had been as the result of being hit by a drunk driver. fuck walmart

frank @ 07/22/2009 04:50 PM CST

I'm an electrician. i have built 2 walmarts and in middle of doing a remodle of a 3rd.

I see behind the curtin of walmart fasuade. (i don't care if my spelling is off, you can kiss my fucken ass if you support "fucken walmart retarted asswipe piece of shit corp", or any staff cuz you have no idea what really goes on unless you are more than a cart getter from parking lot. then you are more of the prob and not solution) they treat EVERYONE like shit. they walk like they walk on water, and everyone else is lower the than the lowest scum on earth.

did you see waco burn to the ground, or hear about the scandle of a type of religous group doing bigomy and teen forced marriage into a baligmist marriage? take that cult mentality and look at walmart. they do this special gathering with employees and CHANT bullshit to make employees feel special, then later walk all over those same employees. as if to make you feel as though you are part of something special, then drag you thru the dirt.

i sit outside a door in back with other electricians waiting for someone to open the door so i can bring in material for days work. 20-30-40 min pass, i go around front and into back. 5 people standing around with thumb in ass doing nothing, maniger too, and i have to force them to open door. not just me, but to anyone. truck drivers with deliverys, specialty items (candy, soda, or anything else not in a semi) and to listen to the shit over the intercom and to hear how they talk to employees.

i was doing lights in garden center one night, someone tried to steal something and exit thru garden center, which was locked. when i told mngmnt they treated me like i was the thief. and getting alarm shut off was a joke. in morning whe i told garden center workers what happened, they told me that mngmnt treats them the same. talking to other workers, i found it is a walmart way of doing things. if you work for walmart, on break in lunchroom, in mnger office, or anywere else besides outside, be carefull of what you say as there could be a wifi "listening device" recording what you say until mngment gets caught with it.

when i say "FUCK WALMART" it is cause i know what really goes on.

use your spell check, anilize my gramer, i don't care, if that is all you read, then why are you really here? go to walmart and do your shopping and be blind to the world that revolves around you (without you). when you are ready to step out of the box it will hit you like a truck.

after you're done shopping, go online and see how much cheaper you could have gotten your trash not shopping at walmart.

i'm out.

mike @ 07/29/2009 06:50 PM CST

I work at Walmart and the managers do stan d around with a thumb sticking up their ass. The only time they talk to associates is when they want to rip your ass. I am constantly being threatened to be terminated. If my break is to short by 1 min. they threaten to fire me, if it is too long by one min. they threaten to fire me. WTF is this world coming to.

jimmy johnson @ 08/09/2009 08:34 PM CST

When I was visiting my brother in Pennsylvania, we went to a Walmart because he wanted to buy Guitar Hero. When we got back to his apartment, we opened it up and found that the guitar had been used. The stummer was fucked up and it looked like there were teeth marks from a dog or something on the guitar. He paid full price for a used guitar. Fuck Walmart!!!

Nick @ 08/31/2009 10:30 AM CST

just got fired from a walmart distribution center....i was an orderfiller, the reason they terminated me was "inability to perfom job", im a 21 yr old male...and if anyone knows how an orderfiller works i pulled a 115 avg and had near perfect reviews and have been with the company for a year....inability to perform job, highly doubtful..i did my job beyond what i was supposed to...fuck walmart

fuckdc7024 @ 09/03/2009 08:38 PM CST

oh yea and overtime at our dc was forced no orderfiller could leave til all trips were done and if u werent done by shifts end u stay till its done and walmart doesnt pay for overtime...

fuckdc7024 @ 09/03/2009 08:41 PM CST

Fuck Wal-Mart. I don't want you in my town selling your cheap chinese shit. Time to support America. Buy American!!!

Andrew @ 09/09/2009 10:58 AM CST

nate @ 09/22/2009 10:59 AM CST

Paris @ 10/04/2009 04:32 PM CST

Ok, i agree with most of you, especially the ones who hate wal-mart, but from i can see you hate the people working there, being managers or otherwise they are still just fucking people. So, i think we should stop hating the wal0mart brand and hate the fucking people who are acting like idiots. Also, stop working, shoping and talking about wal-mart, if we will all stop working there they would go out of buisness

Gheorghe @ 10/05/2009 01:44 PM CST

Wal-Mart makes it workers work off the clock to keep it`s cost low.

Mark " the Spartan" @ 10/24/2009 10:37 PM CST

I worked at Wal-Mart DC 6073 for 12 years. We were forced to work off the clock. When I protested I was fired a week latter.

Mark DC 6073 @ 10/24/2009 10:48 PM CST

Walmart really is the worst place to shop at. I had the worst experience with their vision center. They employ the most unprofessional, uneducated and rude associates there. First, they say your insurance is accepted but after the exam their incompetent employees and entry level manager is demanding to be paid there and then and that I need to file my claim. I will take this up with high level management so they will stop false advertisement. Their customer satisfaction bs needs to stop. Someone needs to step up to the plate and stop coporations like walmart, Sam's club and Costco from destroying our economy.
