Awww, Betty Hutton died.

Many of the obituaries described her as an "energetic" singer and actress, which is a polite way of saying she was a full-on spaz. Seriously, check it out. She had a big voice and flapping limbs and crazy facial expressions, and it's so hard to believe she was allowed to get away with this behavior in the 40s and 50s, when women were supposed to be more demure. She was just nuts, and as a spazzy woman married to a spazzy man, I can identify.

Jim has a video of her singing "Ol Man Mose" and doing a bizarre skipping dance around the stage, her movement punctuated by weird kicks and high-pitched shrieks. Her band members flinch and cower every time she gets near them. It's fantastic!

And, if you ask me (which you don't even have to, because this is my blog), her "Blow a Fuse" is way better than Bjork's remake, "It's Oh So Quiet."

RIP, crazy Betty.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who was saddened by her passing. I remeber her in "Annie Get Your Gun" and some old black and white tv shows in the 50's. She was definitely a fiesty broad.
