:: [Prev] the weekly mux [Next]
Several jobs ago (ca. 1995) I worked with a woman whose husband wrote music reviews for the local indie paper. They invited me over for dinner one night, and the husband immediately asked me what music I liked. I named a few bands from my CD collection, trying not to sound like too much of a dork in front of Mr. Big City Music Critic.
He replied dismissively, "Oh. You like songs."
At first I was confused -- I mean, doesn't everybody like songs? Isn't that what music is? -- but then I just rolled my eyes at this pretentious dick and laughed. I never got invited over again. Big whoop. A friend of mine who occasionally saw Mr. Critic at shows always referred to him as The Android ("I mean, he seems like a nice person and all. He's just an android").
"Oh. You like songs" has since become a punch line around our house, the instant deflater of puffed-up snobbery of all sorts. I'm not sure what made me think of him this week, but my newest muxtape shows that I like songs so much, I like songs with the word "song" in the title. Enjoy.

"Oh. You like songs?"
What the hell does that even mean?

Come on -- it's so obvious! It means I'm inferior to a more-evolved being who has moved past your so-called "songs" into some other, greater form of musical expression.
